Here's another human interest piece done for NTV here in Newfoundland.
Juergen Schau and his wife Elfie, who are German, have had a house in Witless Bay, south of St. John's, for 13 years.
Juergen is a film producer who is an avid nature lover.
Witless Bay Ecological Reserve has the largest population of Atlantic puffins, a wonderful little seabird, in North America. It is on several islands just offshore from the town of Witless Bay.
4 years ago, Juergen decided to do something about the many dead young puffins he was finding in the town. He determined that they were attracted to lights, particularly on moonless or cloudy nights.
Thus began the "Puffin Patrol", which has now saved the lives of hundreds of recently fledged birds, and introduced many children and adults to wildlife conservation.
Thanks also to Holly Hogan, manager of the Witless Bay Reserve, Dena Wiseman and all the great kids on the Patrol.(less)
