[CBC The National 10:20pm, Jan 30, 2010 Toronto, Canada] In New York, the Bethpage High School girls basketball team is hosting a group of Newfoundland, Canada, high school basketball players this week for a special reason.
Every year the Bethpage School District holds a Holiday Basketball Tournament involving four teams. This year the district asked the Canadian team to be one of the four. They were inspired by an NBC special on Gander, the Newfoundland town that acted as a safe haven for airborne American aircraft and passengers during the 9/11 terror attacks.
Bethpage held a welcoming ceremony Wednesday, with several speakers highlighting Canada's efforts to help the United States on Sept. 11, 2001, and touching upon the irony that the Newfoundland team found itself stranded in Toronto for two days after the holiday blizzard shut down U.S. airports.(less)
