This traditional Newfoundland and Labrador humorous song about a whaler is based on the biblical story of Jonah. It may have been adapted from a New York music hall song "Every Inch a Sailor", which in turn was based on Gilbert and Sullivan's "HMS Pinafore".
This is the last of the four videos I recorded with Anne and Humphrey of FiveOaks Bed and Breakfast. in Topsail, Newfoundland. They gave me a book of Newfoundland songs and we sang several of them together so I could learn them. We chose four to record. We did this one in the morning before leaving for St John's, in their beautiful garden.
I wanted to put this up before leaving Newfoundland, so I'm uploading this at St John's airport, with the help of the free and extremely fast wifi. I will miss the wonderful music and hospitality of Newfoundland, but look forward to making more music with Lew Dite.
