Following the attacks on September 11th there were 225 planes in total that were diverted to seventeen airports across Canada after the FAA grounded flights across America and rerouted incoming international flights to different countries. Gander international airport received 38 aircraft that day and nearly 7,000 passengers; which was a major increase of their usual load of only eight flights per day.
The citizens of Gander all pitched in to help the passengers of the flights. Passengers were bused to schools, churches, and legion halls where temporary shelters were set up. Home cooked meals, clothes, and other necessities were given to the people. In some cases people gave the passengers access to their homes.
