Now that I have finished reloading all those videos that suddenly stopped working correctly last year, I can get back to putting up new material.
I begin with a request from my YouTube friend, Cariboubill.
This song, from the east coast of Newfoundland, may have begun as a sea shanty. The earliest printed version was in Helen Creighton's collection, "Ballads from Nova Scotia" (1932), where it was called Loakie's Boat.
The song is often attributed to Virtue Marie Kean, the wife of a sealing captain, Job Kean. She is said to have written the song about a man named Luke Gaulton whom she did like very much. Others claim the song is actually from Nova Scotia, and that Virtue Kean merely adapted it for her own use.
It was first recorded by Art Scammell sometime after 1943 and secondly by Alan Mills (1952), then Omar Blondahl (1955). It became more widely known when recorded by Great Big Sea (1995). Other notable recordings are by **** Nolan, German band, Fiddler's Green (2007) and The Kreellers (2008).
